Tell us about your family?

My wonderful wife Maria is my support in ministry and a minster to me when I need it the most. She works at the Marionville School District in the High School as a Special Education Para. She loves her job working with the students and being able to minster to them as she has opportunity. I also have two sons. My oldest son is Brent and my youngest is Josh. Brent is married to his wife Jeanna and have given me two wonderful grandchildren.  Josh is married to his wife Ashylnn and have given me our newest granddaughter.  I’m fortunate to have both of my son’s families live in Mt. Vernon.

How did you get involved with MVC?

I was going to school at Central Christian College of the Bible and preaching  at Leonard Christian Church in Leonard, MO when I noticed an opening here at MVC for a Preaching Minister. I applied for the position and I accepted the position here in July 2003. I have enjoyed my time here as we continue to strive in the Kingdom of God to reach more people through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

What inspires you?

True change in a persons life for Christ. I don't think there is anything better than seeing someone come to the knowledge of Christ and be transformed into a fully developed disciple of Christ.

What is your favorite book(s) besides the Bible?

Pretty much all of Francis Chan's books. Breaking the Broken by Rob Kendal is a great book concerning God’s plan for helping the poor. Most leadership and church growth books. Authors, Larry Osborne, David Platt, Hugh Halter, Matt Smay, Andy Stanley, Greg Groeschell, Thom S. Rainer. I know it says favorite "books," but there are too many to mention individually.

What is your favorite movie(s)?

The Intern, American Sniper, Star Wars, The Matrix, Pearl Harbor, Forest Gump

What is your passion in life?

Preaching and seeing people come to Christ, being with my grandchildren, golfing.

What is one (or more) of your favorite verses in the Bible?

James 1:2-4, Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.

Romans 5:8, But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 1 Thess. 5:23, May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

What is your biggest struggle or challenge?

Making time to spend with my family.

What would you like to see at MVC in 5 years?

I would like to see our current congregation continue to be transformed in Christ and for our congregation to have at least doubled in size if not a lot more. I would like to see some of our youth students be in Bible College having dedicated their life to serving Christ in full-time vocational ministry. I would also like to see many at MVC being involved in short term mission trip and doing outreach in our community and surrounding communities.

Tell us about your family?

I was adopted when I was a baby by Bonnie and Randy Murphy. I then moved with them to Des Moines, Iowa where we stayed for a few years, but then moved to Ankeny where I spent my childhood. A few more years later my parents had my little brother Chris. I was very happy to have a little brother and even to this day he remains one of my best friends. As a family we attended first church of Christ in Ankeny. This was very important to my family and God has always been the corner stone of our family!  My story would not be complete if I didn’t include the story about a certain important Girl in my life.  Emma and I met when I was a JR. in high school. She came to a few church events and a CIY move conference. Not long after that we began dating. And she has stood by me ever since. Last fall in August I got on a knee and asked her to marry me. And July 21, 2012 we will be getting married! I’m very blessed to have her in my life!

How did you get involved with MVC?

I was introduced to MVC by some previous guys that helped at MVC. When an opening for the youth ministry came up they connected me with the church.

What inspires you?

One of the largest inspirations in my life is other people living a life worth following in true community. That is a lot of words to say I’m inspired by the church being the church!

What is your favorite book(s) besides the Bible?

The book: "The signature of Jesus" written by Brennan Manning is a book all about passionate faith. He describes a faith that is so committed it is like that of Abram in the Old Testament. A faith that will allow you to get up and leave your country, your people, and your home to move to a different place that you don’t know the location of, all because God told you to do it.

What is your favorite movie(s)?

Probably my favorite movies would be the Lord of the Rings Series. There are few movies that have so much to offer a man. War, battles, mystery, conquest, Good vrs Evil, Swords, axes, Bows & arrows. What more can any man ask for!

What is your passion in life?

My passion in life, is to come along side people, not just students but to help them with their lives, not in a sense that I know everything and can solve their problems, but that I can walk along side them and be a shoulder to lean again when the road gets tough.

What is one (or more) of your favorite verses in the Bible?

Luke 9:23 23 Then he said to them all: "Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.

What is one (or more) of your favorite songs?

This is our God, by Hillsong.

What is your biggest struggle or challenge?

My biggest struggle if I had to name one, would probably be in staying organized. I am sort of a messy person and its not hard for me to get lost in my responsibilities! Luckly I have many things to help me stay organized.

What would you like to see at MVC in 5 years

I would like to see a community at MVC that everyone in the Town and Surrounding areas of Mount Vernon knows is a welcoming and loving community. Something like….. All the believers were together and had everything in common.45 They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved. Acts 2:44-47

(Worship Minister)

Tell us about your family?

My wonderful wife and I were just married on December 13, 2014. We just recently moved from Joplin to Mt. Vernon. My wife is finishing up her studies at MSSU to go on to become a Special Education teacher.  That it what she feels like God has told her very plainly to be and has given her a heart for that ministry. I recently graduated from Ozark Christian College. I love music. My favorite thing to do with music is write songs. From an early age, God has taken my love for music and turned it to a venue of love for worship.  That is what has lead us here!

How did you get involved with MVC?

I use to come on Wednesday nights when Lance Bettis was the worship leader and I would play the drums for him. Lance was one of my dear friends and I enjoyed the church and the people very much. I was the youth minister at Hume Christian Church at the time and when I left there and got married, Makena and I were attending a church in Joplin when Mark contacted me and asked if I would be interested in the worship ministry position. God's timing is amazing and it worked out great for us to come be apart of the church and move to Mt. Vernon and be apart of the community as well.

What inspires you?

To see walls break down within people/churches and see the way Christ moves in and through people and how all over the world there are people joining together, just like we do, to worship and learn more about the one true God.

What is your favorite movie(s)?

Oddly enough my wife and I like to watch the same kind of movies. Sport movies and chick flicks. (Yes I enjoy them too) "Remember The Titans" "Coach Carter" and "A Walk To Remember" our both of our favorite movies.

What is your passion in life?

Spreading the good news of Christ, spending time with my wife, playing basketball, music.

What is one (or more) of your favorite verses in the Bible?

One of my favorite verses in Bible is Revelation 21:5 And he who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” Also he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”

What is one (or more) of your favorite songs?

My favorite song(s) would have to be "I Wonder" by Leeland and also "Grace so Glorious" by Elevation Worship. Then a song my wife and I just dance and have fun to is "Watch Me" by Silento.

What is your biggest struggle or challenge?

I struggle with having patience (my wife will assure you of that, just ask her) and also a lot of the time I spread myself to thin with all the things I think I need to do and get done and people I want to help. Which makes having an impact harder when you spread yourself so thin to many people, instead of discipling and investing in a few.

What would you like to see at MVC in 5 years?

I would like to see the change that we are already seeing, continue. I would like to see us adapt Paul's way of spreading the gospel. Never changing the gospel itself, but always changing the way we deliver the gospel to others. Being all things to all people in need. Never being satisfied with where we are and the way we do things, but always willing and ready to go and do what God is calling us to do.
